We’re a family-owned and family-run business, established a long time ago, and having been in the Hampstead neighbourhood for many decades now we’ve seen a few things change.

However, one thing we still love is the fact that NW3 still has a fair few small, independent stores. Not only do they give our ‘village’ a special feel, they really add to the spirit of London - after all, what would our city be if the chains took over entirely and how sad would we feel that we hadn’t done enough to stop the takeover?

So if you’re visiting north London, or staying with us at La Gaffe, and feel like a wander in the locale, check out some of the small businesses below and even pop in and spend a few quid - they really appreciate it and you’re keeping a great tradition alive…

1. Sayeh & Galton Flowers

Tucked away on the charming side street of Flask Walk, close to the tube, you’ll find this charming florist, known for its friendly staff and exquisite floral arrangements.

Known for their stand-out customer service and knowledge of blooms, Sayeh and Galton is the perfect place to pick up flowers not just for everyday beauty but special occasions too.

And who doesn’t like to be presented with a beautiful bouquet of flowers now and again?

2. The Hampstead Butcher

Butcher, deli, charcuterie and wine purveyor, the Hampstead Butcher on Rosslyn Hill should be a must-visit for any foodie in the area. Whether you’re looking for free-range beef and lamb, gourmet cheeses, deli salads or craft beers and special wines, tbe assured of the high quality.

It’s also a great place to pick up supplies for a summer picnic on Hampstead Heath - from sandwiches, pies and cold cuts to pastas, breads and artisan cookies - you can have a veritable feast!

3. Catto Gallery

Just a short walk up Heath Street, and almost opposite from our guest accommodation, the Catto Gallery showcases contemporary pieces both from established artists and rising stars and is the perfect place to browse for something unusual.

Established in 1986, the staff are welcoming and helpful and the displays change regularly which means you never know what you’re going to stumble upon. Perfect if you’re looking for a unique work of art.

4. Artichoke

This local greengrocer is a fantastic place to pick up high-quality fruit and veg and has really gained a following amongst locals since it burst onto the scene a few years ago.

Succulent cherries, juicy clementines, crispy radishes and sticky pumpkins line their outside shelves and Artichoke has also made a name for itself with its healthy juice range - perfect for anyone looking to get in shape. You’re ‘go to’ spot for your Five a Day!

5. La Creperie

This French-inspired food stall next to the King William IV pub is a legend in Hampstead - in business since 1977, it’s impossible not to notice the queue at the weekends, as diners happily wait in line, all to get their hands on a fantastic Breton crepe. Whether you’re hankering for something savoury or sweet they will oblige - the mushroom and cheese is a firm favourite, and if you’re feeling really decadent, follow it with a chocolate and banana creation. La Creperie’s offerings are crisp and buttery, and whilst it looks like a humble little place, it’s a true culinary experience!

6. Exclusivo

If you’re the kind of person that loves high-quality clothing but doesn’t love the price tag that comes with them, then Exclusivo is where you need to head.

This tiny little store, on Flask Walk, is crammed with second-hand designer pieces, both for men and women at vastly reduced prices. Shoes, bags, clothes and all kinds of accessories - many of which are barely used - line the shelves and the owner really is helpful, going out of her way to find you the perfect piece.

Go on - treat yourself!

7. Oxfam Books

If you have a passion for printed matter and also want to help make the lives of people in developing countries better, then Oxfam Books is the perfect place for a browse. Whether you feel like a summer holiday novel, a bestseller or something serious, everything is beautifully laid out and there’s an amazing selection of books there, from biographies and crime fiction to European philosophy and Dr Seuss sets for the kids. Since Hampstead’s got a reputation for literary types, donations come in thick and fast and for hipsters, there’s usually some vinyl lying around too…

If you’re coming to London and looking for a place to stay, we'd love to host you at La Gaffe Hotel in Hampstead. We’re family-owned and family-run and really go the extra mile to make you feel at  home.

We’re just three minutes walk from Hampstead tube (on the Northern line) and then it’s a fifteen minute tube ride into the city centre, so you get both the charming ‘village’ feel of our neighbourhood and the opportunity to enjoy some ‘bright lights, big city’ atmosphere too.

Feel free to contact us by email or phone or book a room directly for the best rates. We look forward to welcoming you.
